Full Time Undergraduate Study
BA in Theology : The BA Year
The BA (Hons) in Theology is a 120 credit point course of study, of which at least 100 credits have been gained at third level. Entry is normally through the completion of the Diploma in Theology, and so represents a further year of full-time study (or its equivalent). Students must complete 6 units of 20 credit points each including a placement and dissertation. Specialisation in tracks from Diploma level is not carried over.
In addition to the units listed, all students complete a programme in Study Skills in semester 1 so as to enable the production of assigned work. This takes place in the course meetings.
Students who are on Methodist Church Foundation Training for Ministry attend a special Seminar.
Course Structure
Students complete two compulsory and four elective units. All units are of credit points unless otherwise indicated.
CORE UNITS (2)
- Dissertation
- Placement
- Mission and Evangelism: History and Context
- New Testament Theology
- Old Testament Theology
- Asian Religions (10)

- Hebrew
- Border Crossings (10)
Level 3 students also take part in the College Autumn Faith Sharing Weekends and Summer Missions.
Placements.
The Programme includes an extended placement which is negotiated between the College and the student, and should relate to the students’ particular interests or career expectations in Christian Ministry. Time is provided for journaling of these placement experiences, which requires the student to demonstrate a mature reflective approach to Christian Ministry in generality and in specifics.
Dissertation.
Students also write a dissertation of 8,000 words on a subject relating to their particular interests or career expectations (and hence to their placements). Dissertation subjects are agreed by negotiation with staff.
Teaching and Assessments
Taught units are largely assessed by production of written work comprising 3,000 words per 10 credits. In some units an end of year examination forms part of the assessment. Marking is normally done anonymously for taught units.
